BP North Sea Galley Refrigeration

Pitkin & Ruddock’s specialist marine installation team were tasked to deliver refrigeration systems for BP’s galley cold-room store for one of their North Sea rigs accommodation modules.

Working closely with the BP’s galley outfit contractor Arcadion, this has been an on-going project spanning four years. From detailed system design, through to hardware delivery and final commissioning, with specialist components, professional installation and engineering expertise were needed for this prestigious project.

The project presented several challenges with specialist equipment requirements. Bespoke refrigeration machinery skid packages and electrical control panels to suit the client’s high specification were manufactured at Pitkin & Ruddock’s Lowestoft facility during 2013. These needed to operate in challenging environmental conditions experienced in the North Sea. Once constructed these were then rigorously tested and inspected by BP before being packed and shipped out to the South Korea construction facility early in 2014.

The accommodation module in which the galley cold-room store was to be installed was being built at an SME heavy construction yard based in Bulsan, South Korea. To complete the installation Pitkin & Ruddocks specialist marine team travelled to the yard and carried out the installation of the refrigeration copper piping between the evaporators within the refrigerated stores, the compressor skids in a purpose built A60 plant room and the air cooled condenser skid sited on the external galley lay-down area late 2014 and early 2015.

2016 Update, the overall offshore installation is now in the process of being set to work, P&R engineers commissioned and performance tested the refrigeration machinery offshore at its final location West of the Shetlands early in 2016 and it has now been handed over to the BP operations team with full supporting documentation and technical support package.
