Taste of Suffolk and Broad Oak Farm Sausage Company

The award winning family food business Taste of Suffolk and Broad Oak Farm Sausage Company, based in Bury St Edmunds, invests in a key energy efficient refrigeration systems upgrade to meet their on-going commitment for manufacturing quality produce.

The Simons family have been involved in the food industry for three generations. They developed the Broad Oak range of meat products which they now produce from their modern manufacturing base in Suffolk alongside a wide range of quality products. The business focuses heavily on a quality delivery service to local independent shops, schools and delicatessens of their award-winning products.

Adhering to new legislation that outlawed the use of the old R22 refrigerants widely used within commercial and industrial air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, The Taste of Suffolk set to implement a complete upgrade to their entire operation using the specialist services of Pitkin & Ruddock.

Research studies have shown that R22 has harmful effects on the ozone layer and has contributed to global warming and was thus recently banned. As R22 systems reach the end of their life expectancy; reliability will decrease, maintenance and running costs will increase as well as spares availability becoming an issue.

To pre-empt this potential business risk Pitkin & Ruddock worked closely with the customer and business operations to deliver an energy efficient solution to the buildings essential refrigeration requirements. Faced with the challenges of zero impact on operations, Pitkin & Ruddock designed a solution that replaced their previous single central pack system with multiple individual systems which would provide complete redundancy and failover capabilities to their cold rooms, storage and preparation areas in the event of a single unit failure. They then implemented a staged schedule of works that would not impact production capability or compromise food quality in any way.

Choosing to phase out their R22 systems and replace them with modern energy efficient units was immensely more cost effective for Taste of Suffolk than repairing and maintaining the old units as well as being kinder on the environment. The new solution has reduced running costs, reduced carbon emissions and improved the overall efficiency of their business.
