Norson Construction for Suffolk Coastal DC

Pitkin & Ruddock was retained by building contractors Norson Construction on the £3.9million contract to build a new HQ for Suffolk Coastal District Council part of a landscaped office village on the site of a former engineering works in Melton, near Woodbridge in Suffolk. The new premises are said to save £8m over the next 20 years. Suffolk Coastal is an efficient, forward-thinking organisation which is dedicated to giving local people the best possible quality of service at the lowest possible cost.

As part of the new development, Pitkin & Ruddock’s task was to design, install and commission new heating and air-conditioning services for the entire building. All units needed to be independently controlled, simultaneously heat and cool and be energy efficient to the highest calibre. With a large open plan office environment it came with its own set of challenges.

The use of the Mitsubishi Electric PLA inverter heat pump system are long life units with a quiet operation, key in busy office areas where concentration is paramount. Benefitting from auto-start with 72 different airflow patterns with 2, 3 or 4 way discharge could be fully configurable to ensure an optimal working environment flexible to the occupants varied requirements.

As you might expect, although the air conditioning solution for this high-tech organisation was enabled for local climate control it was also fully monitored and controlled by one centrally located Mitsubishi master controller. This would enable the Facilities Management to ensure that units were shutdown at the end of the working day.

The efficiency of these units can result in energy savings of up to 30% over conventional systems providing Suffolk Coastal DC with substantial long-term return on their investment.

Critical areas such as the server room and reception were standby air-conditioning enabled, powered by a generator in the event of a power failure.

The installation was of the usual high standard from Pitkin & Ruddock, much of which could be seen by the end user. The majority of indoor units were of a four-way cassette style and heat recovery ventilation grilles. Our specialist trained installation engineers completed the work on time and within budget whilst working alongside other trades people.
