Creating the Perfect Environment for Wine Preservation

Background:

A homeowner required a dedicated wine cellar capable of storing and ageing an extensive collection of approximately 1,000 wine bottles, predominantly red wines.

The objective was to create a reliable, temperature-controlled environment that would allow the wines to mature gracefully while protecting their quality and value over the long term. The cellar, located within a private residence, measures 2.5m x 2.5m x 2.5m high, providing sufficient capacity for the collection while maintaining a manageable space for efficient environmental control.

Design Requirements:

The success of any wine cellar depends on maintaining stable environmental conditions. Temperature fluctuations and incorrect humidity levels can adversely affect the ageing process, damage corks and compromise the quality of the wine. To provide optimum storage conditions, the cellar was designed to maintain:

  • Temperature: 12°C - 15°C
  • Relative Humidity: 60% - 70%

These conditions are ideal for the long-term storage and natural ageing of fine wines, particularly red wines, helping to preserve flavour, aroma and character.

Cooling Solution:

A detailed heat load assessment determined a cooling requirement of 1.07kW for the cellar. To meet this demand, a Friax SPC48-HEVG Vintage Cooling Unit was selected and installed. With a cooling capacity of 1.17kW, the system provides sufficient capacity to maintain stable cellar conditions throughout the year while operating efficiently and reliably.

Designed specifically for wine storage applications, the Friax Vintage unit offers precise temperature control, ensuring the collection remains within the desired storage range and allowing the wines to mature under ideal conditions.

Temperature & Humidity Control and Monitoring:

To ensure the cellar continues to operate within the specified storage conditions, a SensorPush temperature and humidity monitoring system was installed. Wireless probes positioned throughout the cellar continuously measure environmental conditions and communicate via the property’s Wi-Fi network.

Using the SensorPush mobile app, the homeowner can access:

  • Live temperature readings
  • Live humidity readings
  • Historical performance data
  • Trend and analysis graphs
  • Remote monitoring of cellar conditions

This combination of active environmental control and continuous monitoring ensures that the collection remains protected and stored under ideal conditions throughout the year.

Results:

The completed wine cellar provides a professional-grade storage environment within a private residence, capable of housing approximately 1,000 bottles of wine. The Friax SPC48-HEVG Vintage Unit actively controls both temperature and humidity, maintaining ideal cellar conditions for the long-term ageing and preservation of the collection.

Combined with the SensorPush monitoring system, the installation delivers precise climate control, continuous performance tracking and complete peace of mind for the homeowner. The result is a stable and carefully managed environment that helps preserve the quality, character and value of the wines for many years to come.
