F-Gas Regulations & Compliance UK

Strict F-Gas Regulations that govern how refrigerants are installed, handled, recovered and maintained

What are F-Gases?

Fluorinated greenhouse gases, commonly known as F-Gases, are refrigerants used in many air conditioning, refrigeration and heat pump systems throughout the UK.

These refrigerants are highly effective at cooling and heating buildings. However, if they leak into the atmosphere, they can have a significant impact on climate change due to their high Global Warming Potential (GWP).

To help protect the environment, the UK has introduced strict F-Gas Regulations that govern how these refrigerants are installed, handled, recovered and maintained.

The most common F-Gases include:

  • Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)
  • Hydrofluoro-olefins (HFOs
  • Perfluorocarbons (PFCs)
  • Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF₆)

Current UK F-Gas Regulations

The UK F-Gas Regulations are designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by gradually phasing down high GWP refrigerants and encouraging the use of more environmentally friendly alternatives.

If you own or operate air conditioning, refrigeration or heat pump equipment, you are legally responsible for ensuring your systems comply with current F-Gas legislation.

The regulations include:

  • A gradual reduction in the use of high GWP refrigerants.
  • Restrictions on certain refrigerants in new air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
  • Mandatory refrigerant leak testing for qualifying systems.
  • Refrigerant recovery during servicing, repairs and decommissioning.
  • Record keeping for equipment above the applicable CO₂ equivalent thresholds.
  • Installation, servicing and maintenance must only be carried out by qualified F-Gas certified engineers.

These regulations help reduce harmful emissions while improving system efficiency, reliability and energy performance.

Your Responsibilities

If your air conditioning, refrigeration or heat pump system contains F-Gases, you may be legally required to:

  • Arrange regular leak inspections where applicable.
  • Maintain your equipment to minimise refrigerant loss.
  • Keep service and maintenance records.
  • Ensure refrigerant is safely recovered before equipment is repaired or removed.
  • Use only qualified F-Gas certified engineers to install, service or repair your equipment.

Keeping your system compliant not only meets legal requirements but also helps reduce energy consumption, lowers operating costs and extends the lifespan of your equipment.

Why Regular Servicing Matters

Routine servicing is one of the most effective ways to keep your refrigeration or air conditioning system operating safely and efficiently. Regular maintenance can:

  • Improve energy efficiency.
  • Reduce running costs.
  • Prevent costly breakdowns.
  • Extend equipment life.
  • Detect refrigerant leaks early.
  • Ensure continued compliance with UK F-Gas Regulations.

Whether you operate a single air conditioning unit or a large commercial refrigeration system, planned maintenance provides peace of mind that your equipment remains compliant and performs at its best.
